SHYNESS:
A quality of being reserved and timid that occurs during social interactions. It can hinder individuals and prevent them from reaching their full potential in a variety of areas.
Shyness takes a huge social and emotional toll on students, which can effect students relationships with peers, teachers, and parents as well as effecting academic achievement. Since shyness is based on social interactions, students social and emotional developmental stages are affected and can cause problems for students. These include problems such as a lack of social skills or issues concerning academic success. Other problems surrounding the issue may include bottling up their emotions or shutting people out, which can influence the way students make relationships with peers, teachers, and parents.
There are various types of shyness that need to be addressed to students so that they can identify and help solve the issues at hand. Making sure the classroom environment that students are surrounded by have accessibility for help is a key component in addressing shyness. This website's main purpose is to provide a resource for identifying types of shyness, addressing misconceptions, examining the effects shyness has on academics, and exploring ideas in which schools, classrooms, parents, and peers can help shy students!
We created this website as a group project for our Child and Growth Development TCH 210 class at Illinois State University. Our teacher, Kyle Miller, helped us with the information. The group included: Lidia Rich, David Merz, and Scott B. Lidia is a sophomore majoring in Special Education. David is a sophomore majoring in Music Education and Performance. Scott is junior majoring in Physical Education and a minor in Biology.
